Tasmania School Term Dates and Holidays 2026 and 2027
Last updated
August 2, 2026

Planning around school terms is easier when every date is in one place. This guide brings together the future government-school dates currently published by Tasmania’s Department for Education, Children and Young People, covering 2026 and 2027.
It also includes the statewide public holidays published by WorkSafe Tasmania for those years. School-specific professional learning days, regional holidays and college finishing dates need separate checks, so read the caveats before booking travel or care.

How to interpret the school holiday dates
The Department publishes an inclusive holiday range after Terms 1, 2 and 3. For example, the 2026 Term 1 holiday runs from Saturday 18 April 2026 through Sunday 3 May 2026, and Term 2 begins on Monday 4 May 2026.
The page does not publish a separate summer-holiday range after Term 4. Use the published Term 4 finish and next year’s Term 1 start as planning anchors, then confirm professional learning days and your child’s actual return date with the school.
The Department groups these as dates for school and college students, but specifically warns that colleges have their own finishing dates, which may depend on exam dates. Do not assume that the Term 4 end in the table is a college student’s final attendance date.
You can also organise dates visually with the BestSchools school holiday calendars.

Tasmania statewide public holidays in 2026 and 2027
These dates come from WorkSafe Tasmania’s official statewide table. Tasmania also has regional holidays that apply only in specified areas. Check the regional table on the official WorkSafe page if you live outside, or are travelling beyond, your usual school area.

2027 statewide public holidays

| Australia Day | Tuesday 26 January 2027 |
| Eight Hours Day | Monday 8 March 2027 |
| Good Friday | Friday 26 March 2027 |
| Easter Monday | Monday 29 March 2027 |
| Easter Tuesday, generally Tasmanian Public Service only | Tuesday 30 March 2027 |

| Boxing Day substitute holiday | Tuesday 28 December 2027, for Boxing Day on Sunday 26 December 2027 |
WorkSafe Tasmania states that no substitute or additional holiday is observed when ANZAC Day falls on a Saturday or Sunday. It also lists 2028 statewide and regional public holidays, but the education department has not yet listed 2028 school term dates. This article therefore stops its year-by-year school calendar at 2027 rather than implying unpublished term dates.
Professional learning and student-free days
The Department explains that schools have professional learning days during the year and that students do not attend on those days. Its current term-date page lists these 2026 professional learning days:
| Date | School years | Region |
|---|---|---|
| Friday 5 June 2026 | Kindergarten to Year 12 | Statewide |
| Friday 23 October 2026 | Kindergarten to Year 10 | South only |
| Friday 30 October 2026 | Kindergarten to Year 10 | North only |
The Department also refers to a moderation day for student assessments, but the term-date page does not specify its date in the text. No 2027 professional learning dates are listed on that page. We have not guessed either. Check your school’s calendar for the moderation day, any additional student-free dates and the 2027 schedule.
Do these dates apply to Catholic and independent schools?
Not necessarily. These dates come from Tasmania’s government education department. Catholic and independent schools can publish different term dates, holiday periods, orientation days and staff development days.
Use your school’s own calendar as the final source of truth if your child attends a non-government school.
Planning tips for Tasmanian families
- Add student-free days separately. The statewide term table does not replace the school’s own professional learning and moderation calendar.
- Check whether a public holiday is statewide or regional. Royal Hobart Regatta, Recreation Day and show holidays apply in specified areas, not automatically across all Tasmania.
- Confirm college finishing dates. College dates may vary with exams, especially at the end of the year.
- Avoid assuming dates for 2028 onward. The Department’s term page currently stops at 2027, even though WorkSafe has public-holiday dates for 2028.
- Start enrolment planning early. Use the Australian school enrolment step-by-step guide and school enrolment timeline.
- Check the correct year level. Tasmania’s age and year-level structure is explained in the Tasmania school year levels guide.
- Research your local intake area. The school zones and catchments guide is useful before applying or moving house.
- Coordinate interstate moves carefully. Read the moving schools between states guide and compare the Australian school year levels by state.
